My understanding is that bloody discharge without history of trauma is one
sign of possible breast cancer. Usually discharge is unilateral and
SPONTANEOUS, not expressed as she did. This mom's discharge was not bloody.
I think this is very likely normal having her history of several lactations,
and one recent one. Moms can often express for long periods esp. after a
long lactation.
However, that said, I never would want to dismiss something that could be
problematic, not myself being a physician, and especially since this is very
alarming to the mom, I would have her see her physician. Hopefully the
physician is knowledgeable about lactation etc.
Paget's disease presents as an "eczema" looking rash or a persistent
redness, oozing, and crusting of nipple, maybe causing it to itch and burn.
Or sore on your nipple that will not heal. Usually only one nipple is
affected.
