Subject: premie nutrition

³Nancy Wight wrote wrote that it is protein not calories that are most
needed
by the premie. How do we know that? Does the mother's milk compensate in any
way by producing nutrients that are specific to the premie's need? Have any
studies looked at the composition of premie's mother's milk?²

Yes, many studies have looked at premie milk but I believe we have short- to
medium-term data only.

We donıt really know anything about the longer-term health implications of
using HMF over the course of a teenagerıs or adultıs life. Insurance
companies are often mainly interested in shorter hospital stays and and
quicker achievement of discharge weights.

We will gather longitudinal data over the next few decades on the real harm
of giving less human milk to premature babies.

As we all know, a significant percentage of ³micro-premies² have moderate to
severe neurological impairment. They cost $100,000/week to be kept alive.
There is a tremendous economic incentive to achieving short term ³good²
results.²

Some day, we will discover that using HMF instead of donor milk created far
more harm than good. I have no data at hand. That will take decades. In
the meantime, the buzz about Schanler is continuing to grow and more and
more NICUs will quit using donor milk.

Defending this statistically-flawed, methodologically-flawed study hurts the
health of babies. Please stop.
