Perhaps it would be helpful if we identified at the end of our posts where
we practice? I, personally, am in private practice. About once a year, if
I'm lucky, I get to see a nice, easy, normal nursing situation. They seem
to get harder and harder. Probably because more are nursing and there really
are good books and other good helpers out there in the hospital and the
community. Most who come to me have already seen others and read all that
they knew to read. Sometimes I'll just sit in on an LLL meeting to remind
myself that nursing is simple and joyous for most mothers. Recalling
(correctly) that I loved nursing my four babies, and it was usually easy to
take them everywhere with me. I tucked a diaper in my purse and carried the
baby in my arms or in a front carrier. Beginning tenderness was the worst
thing any of my daughters ever experienced nursing their babies. Gratefully,
I either never needed or used any special latch techniques, nursing pillows,
pumps, nipple shields, learned to fingerfeed or any of the other
interventions I come up with for the mothers I serve. Sure hope that when I
respond to posts that no one actually thinks I'd advocate a technique or
tool for every mother/baby situation.
