A phone call from a mom had me going to her home - baby had not stooled x 48 hours (5 days old) and "my milk is still colostrum" even though she has been pumping and feeding her baby her milk. Baby had not latched on in the hospital and still was not nursing...she was supplementing with finger feeding and SNS, bottles, spoons, etc....

We got the breastfeeding going using laid back breastfeeding (thank you, Suzanne Colson, for pointing out to us that the very natural behavior we were watching in all those "skin to skin" post-birth videos - was the exact same "cure" for all our "positioning interventions" a few hours later!), and then we were able to talk - she showed me her milk - clearly transitional milk.

NOW moms think it's a "switch" and on day one you have colostrum and on day 3 you have mature milk...

AAARRGGHH - as I heard DECADES ago: "if it were ROOT BEER coming out of your breast - THAT'S what your baby needs at that stage of life!"
