Dear Karleen,
Although I have no experience with arthrogryposis, I have worked with
babies with torticollis and scoliosis. The twisting of the neck and back
makes it next to impossible for these babies to comfortably get into a nursing
position that works well, and the twist in the neck also drags into the jaw area,
making it difficult for these babies to open their mouths well. I have seen
CranioSacral therapy make some big differences for some of these babies. This
mother might be able to find a pediatric CS therapist in her area by going to
www.craniosacraltherapy.org or www.upledger.com. Pediatric chiropractic
*might* also be useful, but I don't know if it might be too harsh (even though it
is a gentle technique when done appropriately) with arthrogryposis in the
picture, because I really don't know what that condition is.
