Hi,

I saw a baby the other day who is now 4 weeks old, but was born at 34 weeks
gestation. The baby now weighs about 3kg. The mother is exclusively
pumping for her baby. (no formula given) The mother has been feeding baby
60mls per feed, 6 feeds per 24 hrs. The paed had just said the baby could
have 80 mls per feed, 6 times per day. Baby had no stools for 2 weeks.
Paed said it was constipated and to add brown sugar to bottle. Baby
promptly did large poo.
Even on 80mls per feed baby is still having only 480 mls per day. Is that
right for a baby that age? I'm thinking it's not pooing because it's not
eating enough. The baby looks very thin and small, and is not demanding
anymore food.

Any comments about how much a baby should have under those conditions would
be welcomed, as would any references
