This was in reference to getting a baby off a nipple shield, but it often
works well for getting a baby off a bottle, too. Let the baby have 5 or 6
good sucks from the bottle, holding baby and bottle near bare breast. Take
the bottle away and quickly offer the breast.

Baby's tongue is troughed, mouth is open and seeking, suck is underway, and
the baby may just latch on to the breast and keep going.

If it doesn't work, offer another 4 or 5 sucks and repeat. I've seen
babies latch on for their first-ever nursing after 7 or 8 repeats of this,
with each repeat producing a little more activity at the breast. It's
exciting to watch!
