Deborah,
I have less difficulty with babies getting hooked on fingerfeeding if the
mother encourages the baby to pull the finger into his mouth the way he would
have to with the breast.  I demonstrate to the mother to gently tap the
infants lower lip with the finger first, then tickle the baby's tongue until
he extends it to grasp the finger and sucks it in.
        Is the baby really latching on correctly?  Sometimes when the baby
only sucks a few times and comes off, he never had the nipple in the correct
place to stimulate sucking.
