With permission of the mother, I'm inquiring on behalf of the mother of a 4 wk old girl who has developed sore and bleeding nipples. The soreness developed in the past few days and mother discovered when she pumped for a night-out bottle that there was blood. Her question was about whether or not it was safe for the baby to nurse and I assured her it was then moved on to the question of what is causing the situation. Soreness was there before she pumped so doesn't seem to have been caused by the pump. Mother reports no changes in recent days. She called this evening and probably was tired so I will call her in the a.m. to talk when she is more rested. Could latch have been OK at first and go bad at four weeks? She doesn't report itching or burning so I didn't think thrush. What am I missing?

If you could respond to me privately as well as to the list, I'd appreciate it as I don't want to wait for my next digest to read your ideas. TIA
