    I think that your theory of infants being able to absorb sunlight through
lighter skin is probably right on.  I work in a lge teaching hosp with women
of many nationalities.  African American women always check the backs and
tops of the ears as well as the fingernail beds of their infants to see what
"color"  their babies are going to be.  They will make comments like "this is
gonna be a dark one."  I have since used the ear/fingernail bed method to
teach Anglo mothers with interracial babies if the Mother in Law doesn't do
