Hi All,

The article listed below is of no help to anyone working towards getting their facility to go Baby-Friendly!
The neonatologist where I work feels that with this article she can convince our Commanding Officer that we don't need the BFHI and that it is a waste of our money. Our breastfeeding initiation rates average 85% but I'm told by Pediatricians that the duration rates are bad. Inconsistent practices and information given to patients makes me see red. We most definitely need to be following the 10 Steps.

This is the article.

"Baby-Friendly Hospital Accreditation, In-Hospital Care Practices, and Breastfeeding" by
Wendy Brodribb, MBBS (UQ), IBCLC, PhD, FABMa, Sue Kruske, RN, RM, BHth Sc (Hons), PhDb, and Yvette D. Miller, BA (Psych) (Hons), PhDb,c PEDIACTRICS Vol. 131 No. 4 April 1, 2013

Any AAP members care to comment? I intend to explain to the CO that we don't follow the Ten Steps in spite of the high initiation rates, we need to work on this initiative. Actually, we're in North Carolina and we were planning to do their program that is model on the BFHI. Staff education is the only monetary cost.

Regards,
Linda Bubeck
