Certainly this is not evidence-based practice. We did have one midwife who
told every new mother to use lanolin prophylactically, and after rounds she
would come out and tell me that she had told the mom I'd be bringing her her
lanolin.
The only benefit I see in this is that moms who are reluctant to touch their
nipples have to do it when they apply the lanolin, and may become a bit less
tentative. And of course if I gave mom the lanolin she got good instructions
on its use (anybody else besides me see that look of relief when you say,
"...and it melts like butter when you rub it between your fingers" as they
say "oh - not gloppy!").

By the way, I had't run the numbers until yesterday and discovered we had a
90% initiation rate for 2004! Wahoo!
