I'm a 20 year LLL Leader with 7 years as an LC. All of my work has been as
a volunteer. Along with years of meetings and telephone counseling I've
done home visits and taught breastfeeding classes to high school students
and large groups of pregnant mothers and fathers.

I'm not an RN, in fact my college degree is in English Literature. Yet here
I am ready for employment with a pediatrician who thinks he wants an LC on
his staff. He sees it as "a great marketing tool". He also admits to
feeling uncertain how to help the mother of a newborn with her questions
about breastfeeding. He interned at an office that had an LC but she went
on to become a Nurse practitioner. The practice is 6 years old and he has
been looking for an LC for 5 years.

We both have many questions and I need your input. Should I expect that his
malpractice insurance would cover me? Is it better to be self insured and
operate in private practice under his roof?

Doc pictures me providing a 45 minute consult to moms with newborns on their
first in office visit after birth, day 3-5. I imagine that most will need
more time and certainly at the very least a follow up phone call. Does any
one work with a similar schedule?

I'm confident of my skills and excited to begin this new venture but
recognize that I'm about to experience a major culture shock. What wisdom
can you give me?
