Jennifer said: "I am the doula for a client due March
17th. She is choosing natural =
childbirth. She sent me a copy of her birth plan
yesterday, and I was
=
distressed to see the following section:

Feeding:
Breastfeed and Bottle Feed
I would like my baby fed on a schedule"

I think the first step is to find out why she is
stating this. Is it her first child? Has she been
reading "Babyunwise"? (babywise) or Preparation for
Parenting? Who has been advising her for
breastfeeding? What has she been reading and is she
interested in further reading?

She understands the importance of an undrugged birth,
so is likely educated. Understanding her biases wrt
scheduling feeding, and why she thinks her body can
produce sufficient milk with supplementation will
start you on the path to communication.

I, personally, would approach this from a
"breastfeeding 101" perspective and a "here's how to
make your life easier with a baby, not harder".

I would be interested in hearing the results of your
discussion. :-)
