Whether outside or inside the laboratory, females are frequently
perturbed by male "indifference". A normal male mouse subjects a
new female to a getting-to-know-you sniffing routine which gets
shorter with every encounter. A male mouse which has been
genetically engineered to lack the "love hormone" oxytocin,
however, goes through the full 40-second sniffing routine at
every meeting and acts "like he has never seen her before." So,
does oxytocin promote social memory and the development of
familiarity
between individuals? And no, we haven't got any tips on how you
can identify and avoid the "hormonally challenged" in a bar or a
nightclub.
