I agree with you, Denise!!
Babies feed from the BREAST and not from the nipple. The nipple is the
outlet, but the baby is compressing the areola under the nipple to cause the
milk to come out. Using a shield in term babies brings us back to the
misconception that the baby feeds from the nipple and in my opinion, it
prevents the baby from milking the breast, unless in very rare cases as
Winnie points out, you do manage to get the baby to latch correctly in spite
of the shield.
As for the war issue, I beg to differ. I think that it is very relevant to
those of us who are working with mothers whose family members are affected.
I recently helped a mother who delivered her baby at 32 weeks. This
mother's husband had been killed along with 14 other paratroopers when they
were ambushed in an operation which was designed not to harm the civilian
population. Her husband never knew that she was pregnant. Her issues were
totally different from other moms, and more than anything else, she wanted
to breastfeed. She is, and with the help of a shield, by the way. Those of
you who are working with families of POW's or soldiers stationed abroad need
our support to help them help those moms. It is such heartbreaking work.
If we can't share it here, then where can we?
