I think this sounds more like velopharyngeal insufficiency or inadequacy. I believe there's a photo in one of the visual atlases. My oldest had the same thing and I never thought anything of it--just figured it would clean out his sinuses. But just recently I was chatting with a colleague about it and she guessed I had an oversupply and his soft palate was unable to manage the boluses.

He was also mildly tongue-tied (never treated) and couldn't say /g/, /k/, /sh/, /st/ until after several months of speech therapy in preschool. Those are all sounds that need the soft palate to close or contrict.

I am not sure what could/should be done for a baby at this point. Maybe if mom could position baby prone on her breasts. I used to tip my son downhill so the milk would run out his nose easier. He hardly ever got head colds.

hi,
I am hoping for some information to give to this mother (a friend, who ha=
s=20
given me permission to post). Her daughter, now 5 weeks, (baby #2), leaks=
=20
milk out of her nose when mom is feeding is side-lying position.--The baby's pediatrician say=
s that=20
she thinks the leaking milk is a symptom of reflux in this baby, but mom =
is not=20
so sure. None of the other signs of reflux that she experienced with her =
son=20
are there. She is wondering if it could be something else, and if so,what=
?
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.=20
Many thanks
Leslie Cree (fingers crossed that Oct. brings good news!)
