I am quite behind in my reading of Lactnet digests, but regarding the discussion of sending formula from Australia, New Zealand, and California to China, and the question of whether anyone is there to support breastfeeding, I saved this bit of news from the ILCA Globe on-line newsletter, Volume 22, Issue 9, September 2013, page 6:

UNICEF China Unveils YouTube Videos Supporting Breastfeeding

On a lighter side, in advance of World Breastfeeding Week, UNICEF China has added two animated shorts to the UNICEF YouTube Channel. “Breastfeeding: It’s Natural” shows a variety of mammal mothers and babies happily nursing on land, in the sea, and even on ice flows. “Ten square metres of love (10m2ofLove)” chronicles a mother’s desperate search for a place to breastfeed her hungry baby while at the mall and in her community. Both shorts were developed as part of a breastfeeding promotion campaign in China.

So there is an effort at breastfeeding promotion in China. Whether these videos will effectively combat the huge efforts by formula companies to promote their products in China is a question, but I can say that my 2 (almost 3)-year-old, still-nursing twin grandsons, who speak no Chinese at all, love watching the first video.
