Okay Lactnuts - since I've had no reply to my previous email please
tear this apart. (We are all good at this LOL) My "lactation
committee" wants to give these out with the pacifiers, which seem to
miraculously appear in our nursery and seem to be a part of life
around here. (Mothers bring in up to a dozen different kinds for us to
help them choose from. NOT LOL.)
Dawn Kersula -- who thinks this is an exercise in frustration, plus
it's too wordy!

IF YOU CHOOSE TO GIVE YOUR BABY A PACIFIER REMEMBER:

·                  Get your milk supply off to a great start by
offering the breast freely. If the baby doesn’t feed well, call for
your nurse or the lactation consultant to help. “Comfort sucking” in
the first few days is best done at breast, bringing in a great milk
supply.

·                  Start a pacifier only after you and baby really
know what you’re doing (usually at 3-4 weeks).

·                  Don’t use the pacifier to “put off” a feeding.
Think about how you feel when you are very hungry!

·                  Don’t assume that if your baby takes the pacifier
and goes to sleep, he wasn’t hungry. The act of sucking, even if he
gets no food, produces a hormone that causes sleepiness. Sucking on
the pacifier may simply cause him to sleep through his hunger.

·                  If you use the pacifier to calm your baby at a time
when you can’t nurse (in the car, for example), be sure to feed the
baby as soon as you can.
