My name is Veronica Scott, and I am the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor
Coordinator for Flagler County in FL.

To Tony & Val:
This baby is nipple confused. When a baby is given a plastic nipple, whether
in form of a bottle or a pacifier it requires different muscles in the mouth.
Formula flows freely from a bottle and doesn't take much work on the part of
the infant to be satisified. The breast is harder for the infant to feed
from and if the baby gets a plastic nipple first, the baby can become
confused. If you let the baby get hungry, the baby will be frustrated and
won't latch on well. Likewise the mother will get frustrated and be likely
to give in to the bottle. Two ways you can try to correct this, first, let
the baby take a bottle for the first few minutes, not long enough to fill
baby up, but long enough to take the edge off hunger. Then have mother
stimulate a let-down of her milk by either pumping or hand-expressing her
milk. The baby will not have to work as hard and will get the instant
gratification he/she is used to. If this fails, try an SNS, (Supplemental
Nursing System). This will also help the baby in the gratification dept, and
may encourage latch on.. hope this helps

To Dianne Wiessinger:
You really did name the most common ways of describing a BF baby's stool that
I've ever heard. Yellow to orangy in color, usually seedy looking, smells
like cheese, most common way heard. Color can vary slightly depending on
what mom eats sometimes. Slightly green is usually ok but if very runny and
green always and baby is experiencing poor weight gain and irritability, can
be a sign of fore-milk/hind-milk imbalance. Mom may be feeding to little
time on each breast, so baby is getting too much lactose and not enough of
the hind-milk which is rich in fat and sustains baby from feeding to feeding.
In my experience, a foul smelling BF baby diaper usually indicated a virus.
 Watch for other symptoms.
