I just finished teaching a 3 hr class at the university in a graduate class
in Maternal and Child Health. It was great! It was a small class (11
students) so there was enough time for discussion and group work. I started
with asking them to pair up and list as many advantages to BFing as they
could in 5 min. The longest list was 7 advantages. I then showed them 101
Reasons to Bf and went over the advantages. We then looked at bfing stats fro
the USA and the county stats for our state. Then I asked them if bfing is so
good, and the Healthy People 2010 goal is 75% upon discharge, why don't
people BF. This led into a discussion of the myths and corrected some of the
myths they had heard. We then went over some sample policies and procedures
and resources for development of programs. We ended by getting together into
2 groups, developing strategies for developing policies and programs, and
discussing those. They said this class really gave them some useful
information. They enjoyed the group work.
Last week I presented at a regional meeting of Public Health Dept nurses for
2 hrs. We did some role play of situations ranging from a nurse/patient
encounter to a committee meeting of professionals. Everyone seems to enjoy
the role plays. I had several suggestions from Lactnet friends and that
helped-thanks!.
One more conference in Nov and I am finshed for awhile! the next one is
Worksite Based Lactation Programs.
And my best news is that I wrote a grant in 2 days to apply for some of the
tobacco settlement money!! We had gone back and forth over whether or not to
apply for it and just decided Mon to go for it asking for funding for a Heart
Disease Prevention Program ( I do some of all types of health education). So
that is bond to be a world record grant writing marathon-11 hrs yesterday and
7 hrs today!!
