I, too, cringe at the thought of "dieting" an infant (or any child for that
matter). Someone has borrowed my copy of Ellyn Satter's book, so I cannot
look in it for refs, but I recommend it -- "How to get your child to eat,
but not too much". Although some of the breastfeeding info in it is not up
to par (in my opinion), she makes a very strong case for not limiting a
child's intake (at any age).

Anecdotally, my first child was a big baby -- born 9 lbs, fussy avid
nurser, got really plump and round, lots of folds and rolls. She developed
normally (e.g. walked at 1 year). She thinned out when she became really
mobile. Now she's a lovely, lean 5-year-old.
