I think this is a great question Ann.
I am working with a baby currently whose parents decided NOT to follow my
advice-give up the nightly bottle of formula with sometimes spitty, irritable,
gassy 2mth old and see if THAT works. Instead they decided to try 1 day of
formula feeds only- AFTER particularly bad day following mom's ingestion of
cheesy, cream sauce AND baby ended up in local children's ER with LARGE bloody
stools. They endured long battery of testing only to deduce that baby has "dairy
intolerance" - a possibility discussed with them long ago. Mom is currently
considering options given of; 1. elemental formula 2. elemental formula for
1-2wks with pumping on dairy free diet and return to breastfeeding
  3. continuing to breastfeed only on dairy free diet and see what happens.

I was glad to see the option of #3 "given" as most often the option of
continued blood loss through the stools, even for a short period is avoided at all
costs-including loss of breastfeeding.
