Another mom just had a baby a few months ago and she is exclusively bf and

so comfortably.
Dear Friends:
This is the best teaching of all, when we see other people doing
breastfeeding.
I never understood that epithet that I have heard parents use in a
derogatory manner to their small children, "Monkey see, monkey do." I have
always heard it with a sneer in the tone of the speaker. My response is "How
else can monkey learn?"
Another aspect of learning is doing. A colleague of mine talks about
knitting. What if you took a class about knitting, watched great videos of
knitting, got to hold knitting needles and touch yarn, watched the instructor
knit and see the sweater that was made, but never actually knitted. How good
would you be about it?
How much of our breastfeeding teaching really gets in?
Whereas seeing a mother breastfeeding is irresistibly fascinating to
a pregnant woman; if we have a nursing dyad in a childbirth education class,
or in the clinic waiting room, or at church, that is often enough to pique
the interest and motivate.
When pregnant women call to make a LC appointment, sometimes many
months before their baby is born, we can suggest they visit the local nursing
mothers' group, so they can make friends, see new babies, and learn about
breastfeeding.
        warmly,
