"I suggested to her that when she knows more about the section and such,
she may want to express colostrum and bring it with her to the hospital in
the event things don't go as planned."

I wish I had thought to bring my expressed colostrum to the hospital! I
was pumping at almost 42 weeks gestation to get labor going and managed to
obtain almost an ounce of "liquid gold". I saved it in the refrigerator at
home before going in for delivery. As it turned out, my 9lb8oz daughter
fell into the criteria for mandatory blood glucose level. When it turned
out a little low (don't remember the # - but it was borderline) they were
pushing the glucose at me/her. I absolutely refused and tried to get her
to breast. She didn't want anything to do with nursing; just wanted to
cry. (I've heard that's not unusual with very fast labors, 2 hours in this
case, as the babes don't have a chance to get used to what's going on.)
After quite an argument about asymptomatic babies, they finally left me
alone. I refused to have her blood drawn again, and continued to attempt
nursing. Still an unsettled baby. I sent my husband home for the
colostrum and fed by dropper. She finally went to breast at about 12
hours.

If this diabetic mom has a chance to do so, I would think a little
colostrum expressed prenatally so as to be given right after the baby is
born would be just the thing.
