Research published in the March 26th edition of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) examines racial and ethnic differences in breastfeeding initiation and duration. The data is broken down by state and was taken from the National Immunization Survey from 2004-2008, which included telephone interviews of approximately 100,000 women with a child between 19 and 36 months. Overall, about 73 percent of mothers in the US said they breastfed their babies, though many give it up after a few weeks or months. In addition, the rates of breastfeeding initiation among Hispanic women were slightly higher than those of non Hispanic whites. Non-Hispanic blacks had a lower prevalence of breastfeeding initiation than non-Hispanic whites in all but two states (Minnesota and Rhode Island). The analysis concludes with a note that, in light of these results, the CDC is continuing to work toward reducing racial and ethnic disparities in breastfeeding by reassessing its strategies for promoting and supporting breastfeeding among non-Hispanic black women. Access the analysis online at http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5911a2.htm.
