Twenty two years ago I was beginning my journey as a new mother breastfeeding
my daughter. We had to fight the hospital system in order to have a normal,
natural birth and I discovered that whatever my instincts told me to do to
care for my baby, it seemed I had to fight the medical system. It didn't
change with the next two children and I discovered that I had a reputation as
"that woman with the birth plan thing".
This week we found out that our daughter is expecting her own baby next June.
This is the one who had the beach wedding last summer. She grew up with La
Leche League, and ASPO/Lamaze, and always knew what she wanted to do as a
mom. She lives on the Outer Banks on a small island with the nearest hospital
over an hour away. She says she doesn't know why we can't just birth the baby
at home, in the beauty of the island. She doesn't see any need for
interventions unless there is truly an emergency. I am proud that she is
healthy, and wants a healthy, normal birth. She will be talking with the
hospital about their procedures to see if she and her husband can have the
birth they want in that facility. It is such a shame that facilities can't
respect parents' wishes to have the childbirth experience that they want.
What happened to our Lamaze movement?
And yes, this baby will be breastfed. She told him before they got married
that all their children will breastfeed. So now to help my daughter as she
begins her journey as a mother. And yes, she went home with a small library
of books and videos!!

ligament and bum knee)
