Hi Beth,

It looks like the study that just came out in JAMA only looked at obesity measurements between 2 groups - those that had "routine" hospital care at birth, and those that had "breastfeeding promotion" hospital care at birth. But of those that gave birth at the breastfeeding-promotion facility - only 43% breastfed exclusively for 3 months, and only 7.9% exclusively breastfed for 6 months. In other words, the majority of those measured were not exclusively breastfed for even 3 months. In order to get a more accurate picture, they would have had to take measurements on ONLY the exclusively breastfed children and compare THOSE numbers w/ the non-exclusively breastfed infants. Their conclusion was not that exclusive breastfeeding has no bearing on obesity - their conclusion was that giving birth at a breastfeeding-promotion hospital does not necessarily protect against childhood obesity.

Research experts - correct me if I'm wrong.

Subject: new study on breastfeeding and obesity

Can any of you share your impressions of the new study that came out in JAMA concerning breastfeeding and obesity? Here's a link: http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=1667089.

Do you think this study disproves previous studies that indicated that not breastfeeding led to greater childhood obesity?

Thanks,

Beth Lichy
