Well I am a midwife even though I work in NICU and it is a requirement at
our hospital that all nursing staff whether midwives/neonatal
nurses/registered nurses that work here attend an annual breastfeeding
workshop which consists of two days. This is so that we can all give the same
consistent advise and learn how to attach the baby correctly to the breast.
Our unit has a breastfeeding committee which is going to be doing some one
on one with our unit's staff as not everyone can get the time offline to
attend these workshops.
We currently have an 80% rate of mothers going home breastfeeding
successfully and I think it drops to about 60% at six months of age.
For those that leave hospital early and are still having some problems our
hospital has an Extended Midwifery Service supplied free by Queensland
Health who will go out and visit the mother up to five days and then they
are supposed to be handed over to Child Health but if the baby is
premmie/multiple birth this is ofetn extended to a bit longer.
We are very pro-breastfeeding here and try to ensure that all our mothers
have a positive and succesful outcome even when we known that there is a
certain percentage that will put their baby onto formula as soon as they
leave the hospital premises but we still continue to encourage those that
want to breastfeed.
