 Hello All,

I am looking for any recent studies or information around marijuana use and
breastfeeding. Hale list it as an L5 but then goes on to say that in a
study of 27 women who used Cannabis in pregnancy (not very broad study) no
differences were noted in growth, mental and motor development.

I ask because I work with a higher risk population and some of my clients
use Cannabis. We've made great progress in cutting out alcohol during
pregnancy, kicking all kinds of addictions - but cannabis is one that just
seems to be hard to let go of. Possibly because there is a lot of
controversy over the "dangers" or "relative safety" of the drug. In the
past we have seen babies apprehended by the child protective services
because the baby's urine tests come up positive for marijuana. I understand
that the active ingredient is lipid binding and therefore is at higher
levels in mother's milk than in her plasma.

I suppose that I should be telling the young mothers that smoke pot and are
unwilling to give it up that breastfeeding is not the best choice for them.
I would hate to do otherwise because their babies may be apprehended if they
do breastfeed and baby's urine test comes up positive. Seems wrong to me -
if there is any info. out there that shows babies in this situation are
better off being breastfed please let me know. I'd like to share it with
Children's protective services if this situation arises again.
