Here's another breastfeeding mention on film for movie-buffs:
We saw My Name is Joe last night (director Ken Loach, famed for 'slice of
life' British movies - this one got big praise at Cannes and is currently
playing to acclaim in UK - but the difficult Glasgow accents might mean it
will need subtitles elsewhere in the English-speaking world).
The female love interest is Sarah, a very sweet, quite lonely but
worldly-wise, health visitor in a really rough part of Glasgow. In one
scene we see her in her clinic with a young couple and their (probably
about six weeks) new baby. In the background is at least one Scottish JBI
poster - great news for Scottish Lactnetters! - and the young dad says to
Sarah 'Aye, she's getting on all right but her nipples are giving her gyp.'
(Translation - a lot of pain). The mum interrupts - 'hey, I can talk for
myself, y'know!'. Sarah looks sympathetic and says she should get a couple
of cabbage leaves from the fridge and put them down her bra (course, I am
wanting to yell - 'no, no, that's for mastistis, not sore nipples....she's
probably got thrush' but I stay silent....). This leads to a joke as Sarah
says the cabbage leaves will cool her down and soothe her - and the new mum
says she should put one down her husband's crotch.....
Can't decide if it's a good mention of bf or not - probably good, though,
as the mother was happy and was certainly not a 'typical' breastfeeder.
