Hi everyone,

I wanted to thank everyone who responded to me either on or off list. I
will be trying to respond to each of you off list. This means a lot to me
to have you all respond. I was getting frustrated that I was surrounded by
medical professionals and getting opinions but no one seemed to be very bf
friendly about the whole issue.

I also wanted to apologize for posting a personal case to the list. I know
this is usually not desirable, but I thought this was a puzzling case and
that maybe someone knew of a similar case, and I thought it would be
dishonest of me to present this and not mention that this is my own child.

Some other history on my baby:

about the IUGR--never found out what caused it. She was growing fine up
until 3rd trimester, when she fell from 26th% to 8th%. Placenta and
amniotic fluid were all normal, no infections, normal pregnancy.

developmentally--she finally sat up at 10 months, and just a week ago
started crawling (slowly). Fine motor and social milestones all met
normally--interactive, babbling, reaching for everything and getting into
everything. All age appropriate. Muscle tone per neuro is normal--she
kicks and pushes normally and if you hold her up, she is not floppy.

Stool patterns--up until introduction of solids at 9 m: nl bf poops,
yellow mustard q other day. Wets 8-9 diapers per day, on avg. No
diarrhea. All stool studies normal.

Sleeping--Started "sleeping through the night" at 7 weeks but this bothered
me so I woke her up and fed her if she slept more than 5 hours at a
stretch. Startling information for your avg. person but hey.. Co-slept
with us until about 4 weeks ago when I put her on a mattress right next to
our bed with her 32 month old sister (who also had co-slept with us until
then). Still ends up in our bed every night though. Nurses 2-3 times at
night.

Overall health--had one mild viral syndrome at 7 weeks. Currently has a
respiratory virus. Otherwise has never been sick. Has never been febrile.

Four months ago when all this surfaced, I started pumping again--I used the
Avent Isis manual pump and was able to get 1 1/2 oz. to 2 oz. per breast.
This was after not pumping literally since she was a newborn. I am not an
expert but I thought this was a sign that my milk was adequate.
Nonetheless, I started taking fenugreek and drinking Mother's Milk tea.

My other child had no wt. issues and was 18# at 12 months, is currently
28#, 36 in.

My gut--I think whatever the issue was with the IUGR is still the issue
now. I am looking into adipose storage disorders as most babies are laying
down fat in the 3rd trimester. I also think looking into reflux is a good
idea. The pharmacy is making the zinc compound now (I requested they try
to make some sort of solution) and I agree zinc deficiency is a strong
possibility.

I'd like to rule out celiac and CF but these are really low on my list
given the genetics (I am Vietnamese and my husband is Black Jamaican, no
fam history of either d/o, and these d/o are very rare in these races).

Cow's milk protein allergy--yes...am currently on a cow's milk protein
purge for myself and for her (she didn't get much dairy anyway).

Pediasure--AAACCCKKK I can't believe I missed the caseinate and whey in the
label. I sent my husband to buy this after the pedi recommended it because
I couldn't bring myself to buy a product made by an abm company. None of
this stuff. Smells nasty anyway.

Cardiac stuff--good thought. She sweats with nursing at times, but this
could just be due to the fact that she is snuggled up close. But it can be
a sign that she is tiring early. No murmurs detected yet but her sister
does have 2 muscular ventricular septal defects.

Thanks again for all the great encouragement and advice. And don't
worry...this baby is not going to wean for a good while.

Sincerely,
Anh H. Gordon, MD
