I am working with a Mom who has a 4 week old baby, born about 3 weeks early.
Weighed 6 lb, 4oz at birth, discharge weight was 5lb 8oz. At 1 week, weight
was 5 lb 9 oz, at 2 weeks weight was at 5 lb 10 oz. Mom had only called me
once at this point. Nurse Practictioner told Mom to give formula because
breastfeeding was too "tiring" and baby was using up all her calories trying
to breastfeed. Mom was forbidden to nurse but told she could pump and give
baby that milk on top of 2 oz of formula every 2 hrs. At 3 weeks, the baby
had gained 11 oz in that week.. The nurse practictioner said " You see, this
just proves that every mother can't breastfeed!" After Mom was insistant about
BFing, this Nurse practictioner told her that her milk doesn't have enough
calories in it. Mom was told to give 2 oz of formula every 3 hrs now and then
can nurse to top off. Baby is not very interested this week, milk supply is
down, baby has been referred to the hospital feeding team ( OT and PT at
rehab) for feeding difficulties. Mom's question to me is " why am I not
producing enough calories in my milk?". It was a very long phone consult!!!
After that she said I made more sense then anyone else she had talked with. I
am seeing her this evening for a consult. This nurse practictioner by the way,
told this mom at the prenatal visit while searching for a Ped, that this
office is BFing Friendly.
