Dear Priscilla,

I might even take a different tack on the baby care issue:

Not even present anything about formula. I'm not sure they would be
interested in the "less incidence of disease" aspect, etc. Maybe just
present it as how to feed a baby -- that newborns nurse about every 2 hours,
just like puppies and other mammals, and that as they grow they nurse less
often. That breastmilk provides all sorts of good stuff in exactly the
amounts babies need to make their bodies and minds grow. That breastfed
babies are smarter and healthier than those who don't breastfeed, and the
longer they breastfeed, the healthier it is. That the poops of breastfed
babies don't even smell bad!

You could talk about bottle-feeding expressed breastmilk if baby and mom
have to be separated, and talk about those other issues you
mentioned--swaddling, changing diapers, baby's need to be held, the
back-to-sleep issue and tummy time.

Kids this age aren't thinking about how they are going to feed their own
children, but they are certainly forming their own ideas about how the world
works. Make breastfeeding the norm. Ask for questions; if someone asks about
formula, you could say that is what you feed babies if they can't have
breastmilk for some reason.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Does anyone have any suggestions about what works and what doesn't work with
kids in this age group? I'm also planning on talking about diaper changing,
swaddling, the back to sleep campaign and temperature taking. I'm also
going to talk about how to hold a baby and how to feed a bottle and burp a
baby, since some of them may have that opportunity with younger siblings or
if they babysit.
