Thank-you for the reply's to my 'emptying breast' question. I appreciate
the time all of you took out of your busy day to send a response. Many have
asked for the context of this question.

I work in a very rural community. We do not have lactation consultants.
The services are fragmented. Many wonderful agency's provide prenatal and
follow-up education. 2 years ago we formed a coalition composed of hospital
staff, childbirth education, community health nurses, office nurses and LLL,
to investigate the possibility of providing consistent, basic education
throughout the continum. One of our goals is to develop evidence-based
teaching guides. We meet monthly, work on a preset agenda and when
inconsistency in 'beliefs' arise we search for guest speakers, journal
articles or other forms of acceptable research to back up our teaching.
This provides an opportunity to educate the care-providers as well.

Each agency has agreed that the teaching guides developed will be used to
provide consistent, basic education to the clients. Many of our members
are nurses. It is stressed that the guides will not take the place of good
assessments and the variances they sometimes find.

So... The question 'length of feeding' started some interesting dialog
between the members. As you can imagine there were many answers to this.
Your responses will provide some assistance to this section.

We are currently searching for grant funding that might provide the funding
for two lactation consultants. We have some good leads. Anyone have any
suggestions of where to look.

Again, thanks for your responses, I'll share them with the team. Marley
