Hi, all

After reading Liz's urgings to read IBLCE's new "Code" I must admit I don't
see what the fuss is all about. Following the WHO Code is certainly ideal,
but if we find we just can't adhere to it, not following it is good enough.
That WHO Code is such an ideal, why should we expect that all IBCLCs would
be able to achieve such a high goal? After all, we know that following the
WHO Code is better, but some IBCLCs have problems trying to follow that
Code. Shouldn't the choice be up to the individual IBCLC? Following the Code
just won't fit the lifestyle of many IBCLCs and we shouldn't do anything
that might make them feel guilty. And for IBCLCs who need help trying to
follow the WHO Code, I understand that starting next year, as IBCLC
candidates leave the exam, they will be given an "exit bag" full of coupons
and samples designed especially to help the new IBCLC just in case she finds
that following the WHO Code just doesn't work for her. I understand there
are a number of corporations who have generously offered to fund such bags.
A couple of them even plan to have a WHO Code Hotline that IBCLCs can call
if they have questions about how to follow the Code in challenging
situations.

So what's the problem?

Melissa Vickers, IBCLC, with tongue digging a serious hole in cheek.
