Betsy Hofffmeister asks whether a new mother who is also an ICU nurse
should use one of the above for severe nipple damage.
I don't have the answer to what she should use, but she should
definitely have her nipple wound(s) cultured BEFORE applying anything
at all to them. Her skin flora may not be just normal household
microbes. In fact, it is very likely that her skin flora consists of
all kinds of hospital special hybrids. Treatment can be started before
culture results are back, and certainly it sounds as if some kind of
cleansing wound care is strongly indicated, but by all means get a
culture from the untreated wound first.
