I have searched the archives but need some more info. I am working
with a mom that was told emphatically (sp?) that she *could not*
bf while taking Claritin and she would have to wean immediately right
now, no compromise about it. The baby is 18 months old, 24 lbs. and
doesn't exclusively bf.
I have checked Hale's and the archives (as mentioned.) The mother
had an anaphylactic (sp again) reaction to an allergen test to molds.
(Very prevelant in our area.) She asked two questions. 1. Can she
really bf while on Claritin? and 2. Is there a different (safer)
antihistamine that is better to take while bf?
I was prescribed Claritin for my allergy induced asthma and given not
only the green light on it for bf, but was also told by midwife/OB
office that it was fine during pregnancy (although I haven't
needed it since pregnancy has put my asthma on hold.)
Anyone with a medical opinion on this or have any other info on
Claritin that I could pass on to this woman. She was told twice in
the office that she could not bf and then called again at
home by a nurse to re-emphasize the point. The mother is very
committed to long term bf with self weaning by the child and figures
that there has to be other allergy sufferers out there that are bf
and taking *something* for the allergies!
TIA!
