Friends, I personally hope that we DON'T respond negatively to this open
letter from NOW to Michael Leavitt, Secretary of DHHS about the Born To
Breastfeed Ads. While I don't necessarily agree with everything it says,
and I do understand the purpose of the ads and the research that went into
them, I say respectfully that I thought the letter was more positive than
negative. They made some excellent points about issues we are working to
change in our own state. It sure would help us to have some of them
mandated from the national level. The ads are (and please don't flame me)
old news. They have been out for a few years and perhaps they have done
enough good that the next step is that which NOW outlines. Personally, I
see a lot of working women (well-educated and otherwise) initiate
breastfeeding only to quit somewhere along the way in that first year due to
issues with working or insurance or any of the other issues NOW mentions. I
am no big fan of NOW but I think they have a point. These are huge issues
and they should be addressed. The ball is rolling. I say let's keep it
going our way, not make enemies of a powerful group that seems to have some
good ideas and who just might help us along.

Marsha
