Dear Marie,

Just spoke with a microbiology person I work with and she was doubtful
that the pseudomonas would cause the baby any trouble. It does not
produce the type of toxin that some bacteria that cause food poisoning do
and it is considered normal flora of the GI tract. Many moms breastfeed
during mastitis and sometimes throughout abcess drainage and there do not
seem to be very many reports of problems. Has she had the milk cultured
or a colony count done on it? Don't know if that is a real good idea
since the bacteria may show up and reinforce the doc's ideas about
pumping and dumping. But a low count might put everyone's mind at ease.
