I have been reading about Syntocinon being withdrawn from the market, and this
reminds me of an LC friend of mine who is also an L&D nurse. She has always
gotten the MDs to prescribe vials of Pitocin instead of Syntocinon because it is
a lot less expensive and very available. She then has the mothers use the
Pitocin nasally. My 1995 Drug Handbook says that Syntocinon is suplied in a
solution with 40 units/ml, and Pitocin is supplied in ampules or vials with 10
units/ml. She would let the mom use a tuberculin syringe to draw up the
solution and sniff it up, says it works well. I'm not a physician or a
pharmacist. Comments? Doubt Pitocin will ever be off the market!

Green stool comments. I had a chance to talk with Jan Ellen Brown, who will be
speaking on Cystic Fibrosis at ILCA. She is going to be doing a very
interesting session with lots of information, Her 8 year old has CF. She says
that breastfed CF babies do very well and often do not have many symptoms in the
early months other than green stools. It took her 10 months to convince her
pediatrician to test her child for it, and says that many other parents have had
the same experience if they breastfed. So although it is not a common
occurrance, it may be good to keep CF in mind if green stools persist, and the
usual methods of eliminating them don't work. These babies also taste "salty"
to mom when she kisses them, and this may be another clue.
