I have a mom nursing a four month old, her third baby to nurse, that was
experiencing multi skin problems ever since delivery. Her other two
children had also experienced problems at varying degrees related to allergy
and we had altered her diet at different times during their nursing
experience. She is a long term nursery mom and very adapt at reading her
children's behavior.
I had consulted with her about 10 days ago related to the third child's skin
problem increasing and referred her to our area pediatric allergy clinic.
Over this past weekend she came down with the flu, 104 temp and all the
other symptoms. She stated to me, on Monday, that she had nursed and nursed
her baby, but her milk supply was so down that her husband mixed 2oz of
formula and gave the baby. With in two minutes the baby had vomited it all
up, started turning blue, having difficulty breathing and broke out in
whelps about an inch high. They rushed him to the ER and by the time they
arrived the baby was hardly breathing. A true anaphylactic shock related to
cow's milk. The mother is now off all dairy products her self. She stated
that her dietary intake of dairy products was very high during this
pregnancy, much higher than her other two pregnancies.
