Well, the fee is high because it reflects the years of experience, school,
etc, that went into making you who you are, professionally.

This is the same issue as paying quite a bit for a good auto mechanic...for
a good violin teacher, etc. People balk at these things...but one must
remember that it takes us years to develop our professional experience
base. I think of all the years it takes my kids' music teachers to develop
their skill at the instrument, and then I am more than happy to pay for the
service. They are nice enough to barter for those families who cannot pay
full price.

I have had people balk at the charge of an IBCLC, but they pay more for
their mechanic, or more for their dog obedience class, to tell you the truth.

When I counsel people online, (which is often), I point out to people that
an IBCLC visit is the way to go to get to the heart of the problem fast,
and that it is going to cost them a lot less than the $1200 per year of
formula (minimum, not one of the designer brands) that they were ready to
shell out without batting an eyelash. That usually puts a damper on *that*
argument.

We must value ourselves as professionals, and hold that value within
ourselves, and not hang our heads in shame, or stay there for more hours
than we charge for to make up for the fact that we charge..etc. It does
us, our clients, our colleagues, and our profession a disservice.
