Regarding Marlee's baby uninterested in nursing:
I have seen babies with a lack of interest in suck. This baby was suctioned,
apparently, by ETT and gastric suction, at birth and afterwards when feeding
wasn't commencing. As evidenced by the large amount obtained from the
stomach, the infant probably had no drive for anything else(it's stomach was
full), and I see many babies like this. Stadol is one familiar theme when
this happens.
I was surprised that the fact that the baby hadn't voided at 12 hours was
taken as a red flag. Most pediatricians I know of are not concerned until
beyond 24 hours on the first day. I was also surprised at the amount of
glucose water fed the infant. At that age, their stomach is still with a
small capacity, (even when an at birth suction may have yielded closer to 30
cc's). These amounts of formula and glucose water that were given are often
enough to further depress the hunger of an infant.
I find that gentle, persistant( but with frequent breaks) waking
helps the infant begin the process of voiding, stooling, looking around,
finding its mother, and then coming to, and eventually feeding.
One problem is that we often aren't allotted sufficient time to help
a new mother do this. If she has never given birth before, or if she had a
hard labor, she needs assistance, usually. I find it works, though, with many
a sleepy baby who came from a bit difficult birth.
