My sister-in-law had a premature baby, and while the baby was still on IV
and not getting any milk, the doctor talked her into participating in a
formula study. He told her that even if she started out breastfeeding, she'd
probably quit soon because it was very difficult and often painful, and then
she'd have to buy formula, but if she started in this study from the
beginning, she'd get all her formula paid for. I think she got some other
baby items as gifts as well. She wanted some time to think it over and he
got quite annoyed with her, so she gave in and agreed. I was so upset when I
heard about the way she'd been pressured into participating in the study -
she had been pumping her milk and wanted to breastfeed until this happened.
