Well, today is just one of those days that I feel like writing my heart
out to the LACTNET list. I am sooo TIRED of moms being given unnecessary
bottles of formula for no reason other than to lighten the burden of the
nurse. This especially happens at night. I just saw a patient who was
nursing beautifully yesterday. She was having trouble getting the baby
to latch last night, and the nurse told her "oh, just give him a bottle,
he's a little yellow anyway". I asked the mom if she was offered any
assistance in getting her baby to latch, and the answer was no. In other
words, this nurse just didn't want to deal with the problem, and made
formula seem like it was no big deal.

I have inserviced these nurses for over one year. I have spent
innumerable hours of putting together powerpoints, policies and
guidelines. I have written notes. I don't know what else to do!!

Sometimes I truly feel like I am spinning my wheels - why am I here? To
solve problems that occur when birth plans are ignored, babies are born
with lousy sucks, and formula is given during transition for no good
reason. Sometimes there is a good reason to supplement, but even then,
these babies are getting 1-2 ounces of formula feeding, by bottle, when
these nurses know better. As I said, I have inserviced them to death.

Oh well, any words of helpfulness will be appreciated. I'm ready to
give up today and go home...
