Don't knock what you don't understand or have seen or used. Just like many of us thought that bottles were wholly evil, Dee Kassing's pioneer article in JHL helped change our thinking. Bottles are tools and should be considered that way, should be tested for effectiveness etc. when mother can't be available or when babies can't suck for some reason. Different designs are important and research should continue, in my opinion. I know for a FACT that this bottle can be helpful in certain situations and is a useful tool. I wish I could get my hands on it here, even in a limited way. One tool is not good for all babies. If we treated breastfeeding with as much respect as we treat sex, we would understand that tools, toys, assistive devices, alternative devices, alternative methods, and substitutes are all that = substitutes and bridges at best to the real thing. But everybody instinctively realizes and accepts that sex is not just about the delivery of bodily fluids but relationship and communication that is as much spiritual, emotional as it is physical. I suppose the campaign against pornography and the sex industry is a similar one. Some support it, some say who cares. When we support breastfeeding and everything else as just substitutes for the real deal, we are taking a position that we think is "on the side of the angels". We are targets for those who don't want to acknowledge that there even exists a "side of the angels." We can BOTH support breastfeeding and judiciously use tools that enable our mothers to breastfeed successfully. The trick is to be wise in the use of the tools and teach discrimination as we go. No corporation including Medela, Evenflo, Ross, etc. exists to lose money and die. It's grow or die for them. As a consumer and advocate, my job is to analyze the products themselves. If they are good for my client, I will advocate them. If not, I won't. I will continue to test products if I'm allowed to with whatever objective and subjective tools I have at my disposal. And if I am not allowed to speak my experience, I might as well retire because the age of reason has gone! I am an advocate for the development of objective measuring tools for products, the more the merrier. I salute any company that is willing to spend money for hard science, not just "focus group" research, which is very soft in my opinion.
All of the above is my opinion only. Sorry if anyone is offended.
