Rachel, thanks for the reply to my post regarding bilirubin.  This is
all as I was taught and have believed for the past 20-some yrs--that
bilirubin is primarily excreted via stooling.  And so the statement in
the press release about excreting it in urine is incorrect?  That's why
it caught my eye.  
 
"...The first line of treatment for newborn hyperbilirubinemia is
phototherapy -- exposure to high intensity light.  The light penetrates
the skin and converts bilirubin to a less toxic substance, which is
eliminated through the urine."  
 
I just wanted to make sure I hadn't missed something important on this.
I remember when that deCarvalho study came out.  A LLL friend of mine &
I made copies & took them around to all the ped offices in our town.  We
were met with quite a bit of hostility in some offices, but shortly
thereafter the practice of "flushing them out with water" began to die
off at the local hospitals.
 
I just expected better information on an NIH press release.
