Linda and all,

The research was published in the Correspondence section of the New England
Journal of Medicine (339:1559-1560). Julie Mennella and Gary Beauchamp descibe
their research into the passage of smoke flavor into the breastmilk of smoking
mothers. You can read it at

Lots of people start smoking who don't actually like the taste of cigarettes.
Isn't parental example and the easy availability of cigarettes much more
likely to account for the higher rates of smoking among the children of
smokers? How many of us pilfered our first cigarettes from mom's or dad's
packs? (I confess; I first smoked one of Dad's Camels, and an unfiltered one
at that!).

Let's hope that "smoky milk" doesn't become yet another dumb reason to not
breastfeed.

Warmly,
Carol Kelley LLLL reformed occasional smoker
