If the young mother wants to be scared out of smoking, one way would be to
show her how it may hit her pocketbook:  children of smokers have a much
higher risk of ear infections and respiratory tract infections.  All that
$$$ spent on medications that may have been unnecessary--who'd want to
encourage extra doctor visits and all that?

My only smoking friend has the sickliest babies I have ever known, and one
has ear tubes now.  Not a scientific study, of course!
